HVAC SERVICE TECHNICIAN

Responsible for diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining residential heating, cooling, and ventilation systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications, applicable codes, and Connecticut licensing requirements. This role works independently from a service vehicle while collaborating closely with dispatch, field supervisors, and teammates to deliver safe, compliant, and high-quality service. The technician takes full ownership of assigned calls, prioritizes jobsite and customer safety, documents work performed, coordinates warranty and technical support needs, presents repair recommendations and quotes, and collects payment—while serving as a brand ambassador for Gault Family Companies.

JOB SUMMARY:



  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair residential HVAC systems and components, including furnaces, boilers, hydronic systems, heat pumps, central A/C systems, ductless equipment, air handlers, thermostats, and system controls.

  • Perform preventive maintenance, seasonal tune-ups, safety inspections, and performance testing to verify proper operation, system efficiency, and customer safety.

  • Perform service-related repairs and component replacement (motors, capacitors, contactors, sensors, igniters, switches, controls, circulators, etc.) while following safe work practices and lockout/tagout procedures where applicable.

  • Handle refrigerants in compliance with EPA Section 608 requirements, including proper recovery, evacuation, charging, and leak evaluation during service work.

  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable state, local, and national HVAC codes and perform all work in accordance with Connecticut licensing scope and regulatory standards.

  • Work independently in the field while coordinating closely with dispatch, field supervisors, and teammates to manage call flow, prioritize safety-critical situations, and respond effectively during peak demand.

  • Take full ownership of assigned service calls from arrival through resolution, ensuring safety, professionalism, accurate diagnosis, clear communication, and complete documentation.

  • Communicate findings and repair options to customers in a clear, professional manner; submit quotes, obtain approval, and collect payment per company process.

  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and best practices, including ladder safety, electrical safety, confined-space awareness, and proper handling of hazardous materials.

  • Support workforce development by assisting with apprentice training, ride-alongs, and job shadows, modeling safe work habits, professionalism, and technical standards.

  • Miscellaneous duties as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strong technical knowledge of residential HVAC systems, components, controls, and service procedures.

  • Strong understanding of HVAC safety practices, including combustion safety, electrical safety, refrigerant handling, and equipment operation.

  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, sequence-of-operation charts, and manufacturer service manuals.

  • High level of ownership and accountability for service outcomes, customer safety, and documentation accuracy.

  • Ability to work independently in the field while remaining a collaborative team member with dispatch, supervisors, and peers.

  • Professional judgment and decision-making skills, particularly during on-call, emergency, or safety-sensitive service situations.

  • Proficient with mobile devices, service software, and digital documentation tools.

  • Serves as a positive safety role model and mentor for apprentices and job shadows.

COMPETENCIES:


  • Current B, D or S state license

  • Current EPA license

  • Valid driver’s license

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, twisting, lifting, and pulling of parts and equipment. Must have the ability to lift and/or move items up to 85 pounds. The position requires employees to regularly talk and hear.
